            Symptoms of a Kundalini Awakening

Kundalini experiences that occur during the awakening process can be extremely diverse and powerful. All of the major physical systems can be affected. Symptoms can be of a physiological, psychological, emotional, or para-psychological nature. Sometimes the experiences are limited to one category, but often they affect more than one area. To the untrained eye, especially those with backgrounds in classical psychology or medicine, it is easy to mistakenly label an intense Kundalini awakening as a psychotic break. That is why it is so important that the Western world be educated about this spiritual phenomenon.

Drawing upon Bonnie Greenwell's wonderful book, "Energies of Transformation: A Guide to the Kundalini Process" (reviewed elsewhere in this site), we hereby list the most frequently occuring symptoms by category:

Physiological:

Pranic activities or kriyas: Involuntary jerks, shaking, vibrating, or spasms. Contractions, especially of the anus, abdomen, and throat. Sudden movements of the arms, legs, or head. Involuntary dancing, hopping, or spinning.

Internal Physical Sensations: Ecstatic, blissful sensations lasting a few minutes or a few months. Feeling intoxicated, detached, slightly out-of-body. Falling into a trance, staring into space. Increased pulse rate. Tingling, itching. Nervous energy, tension, throbbing; sometimes alternating with lethargy. Nausea, abdominal pain. Chest pains as if having a heart attack. Chronic or temporary pains all over the body, for which no diagnosis can be made. Pain or electrical sensations in big toe, darkening of toenail, or losing toenail. Intense sexual energy; spontaneous orgasms, either genital or described as "whole body" or "brain" orgasms. Body feeling light as air, out-of-body experiences. Stomach swelling, as if pregnant.

Visual Problems: Temporary blindness. Diminished vision. Extreme sensitivity to light. Acute vision. Twitching between the brows.

Changes in Eating Patterns: Major appetite swings - may or may not have impact on weight.

Temperature Changes: Hot flashes, sometimes profuse sweating. Night sweats. Flashes of freezing cold, sometimes alternating with heat flashes.

Illness or Pseudo-illness: Apparent heart attacks, usually false alarms. Stomach disorders and other digestive tract problems. Symptoms of adrenal exhaustion.

Psychological and Emotional Symptoms:

General: Intensification of any unresolved psychological tendencies and issues, fear of death or insanity, mood swings, overwhelming waves of anxiety, anger, guilt, or depression as well as intense compassion, unconditional love, and heightened sensitivity to the moods of others.

Other mental and emotional: Temporary mental confusion and difficulty with work tasks. Ritualistic behaviors. Inability to sleep. Impulsive desires to uproot one's life. Feeling a connection with entities or guides from other dimensions. Psychotic symptoms, i.e., seeing visions, or lights, or hearing sounds. Scattered thoughts, indecisiveness.

Parapsychological Symptoms:

Psychic awareness. Unusual synchronicities. Healing abilities. Absorption of consciousness into mystical states of unity, peace, light, or energy. Overwhelming waves of bliss.

Keep in mind that, as diverse as this list is, it is by no means complete. These are, however, the most frequently occuring symptoms. For a complete list, we advise you to read other material recommended in this website.
