What is Kundalini ?

One thing that becomes clear very quickly once you begin a serious investigation into what exactly Kundalini is, and what exactly it does, is that the so-called "experts" can't seem to agree on much of anything except that it is a remarkable phenomenon. Since I was thrust into a situation where I needed to know as much about Kundalini as possible, I read everything I could get my hands on concerning the topic. Here are, based on my personal experience with Kundalini, some of the best definitions I have discovered.

I will begin by quoting from Bonnie Greenwell's "Energies of Transformation: A Guide to the Kundalini Process". As you may have noticed, if you have perused much of this site, I refer to this work often because I find it to be the most thorough reference I have been able to find regarding Kundalini Awakening. In chapter one, she states:

"It appears that when people pray, meditate or turn inward with great intensity to find "God" what they may ultimately experience is the sat-chit-ananda of the ancient Indian scriptures. Sat is existence or beingness, the substance or essence that is all things; in Eastern scriptures prior to creation there was only sat, one, without a second, undivided. It exists always and everywhere. Chit is cosmic intelligence or knowledge that fills everything, a consciousness without personal identity. Ananda is ecstatic bliss. Indian pandits identify these three qualities as the essential nature of existence. Direct intuition of them becomes possible following the eruption of Kundalini energy, which is latent in each of us. When this primal, intense energy awakens it seems to move with intentionality through body and psyche and is believed by eastern mystics to have the power to transform a person at the cellular level. When one feels the first intense waves of this energy/consciousness, and is tossed into the physical, psychological and spiritual chaos that follow, it is called Kundalini awakening.

If you have awakened this energy, whether through discipline and spiritual practice, as a consequence of breathwork or other intense therapies, following a near-death experience or other traumatic event, or inexplicably, for no reason at all that you can understand, you are connecting with evolutionary energetic and psychic forces. These energies carry consciousness with them just as waves in the air can carry radio signals, and in some people cause the equivalent of a psychic Armageddon, where the boundaries that have contained self-identity are pushed open and new possibilities emerge".

In "Kundalini, Evolution and Enlightenment", John White states:

"What exactly is Kundalini? The answer has many levels, on which various difficulties and controversies will be encountered... In general, the question can be answered briefly like this. Kundalini is the personal aspect of the universal life force named prana by the yogic tradition. This primal cosmic energy is akin, if not identical, to ch'i (Chinese), ki (Japanese), the Holy Spirit, and various other terms from cultures that identify a life force that is the source of all vital activity".

From "Kundalini - energy of the depths" by Lilian Silburn:

"Kundalini, the upright axis at the innermost center of a person and of the universe, is the very source of man's might, drawing and unfolding all his energies...this mysterious energy manifests with a violence beyond belief and cannot be manipulated without incurring certain risks".

From "Spiritual Emergency", edited by Stanislov Grof, M.D. and Christina Grof:

Kundalini is seen as an "energy" that usually resides "asleep" at the base of the spine. When this energy is "awakened" it rises slowly up the spinal canal to the top of the head. This may mark the beginning of a process of enlightenment.

In its rise, Kundalini causes the central nervous system to throw off stress. The stress points will usually cause pain during meditation. When Kundalini encounters these stress points or blocks, it begins to act "on its own volition," engaging in a self-directed, self-limited process of spreading out through the entire physiopsychological system to remove these blocks.

Once a block is removed, Kundalini flows freely through that point and continues its upward journey untill the next stress area is encountered. Further, the Kundalini energy diffuses in this journey, so that it may be operating on several levels at once, removing several different blocks. When the course is completed, the energy all becomes focused again at the top of the head
.

The difference between this final state and the initial state is not simply that Kundalini is focused in a different place, but that in the meantime it has passed through every part of the organism, removing blocks and awakening consciousness there. Thus, the entire process of Kundalini action can be seen as one of purification or balancing.
